Who is the 14th Dalai Lama? What does they do?
Since the 5th Dalai Lama’s reign in the 17th century, when he represented Buddhist values and traditions, his persona has always been a symbol of Tibet’s unification. The Dalai Lama was a significant member of the Geluk tradition, which dominated Central Tibet politically and numerically, but his influence in Buddhism transcended sectarian lines.
Although he played no official or institutional role in any of the religious traditions, which were led by their own high lamas, he served as the universal symbol of the Tibetan state, standing in preference to any particular school for Buddhist values and traditions.
The fourteenth Dalai Lama has assumed the role of the Dalai Lama’s traditional role as an ecumenical figure, bringing together diverse religious and ethnic groups. In the exiled community, he has worked to overcome sectarian and other divisions, and he has come to represent the Tibetan nation for Tibetans living in Tibet and in exile.
The Dalai Lamas or their representatives presided over the Tibetan government (also known as Ganden Phodrang) in Lhasa from 1642 to 1705 and from 1750 to the 1950s, which had varying degrees of autonomy over all or the majority of the Tibetan Plateau.
This Tibetan government was supported and shielded by the Manchu-led Qing dynasty’s emperors as well as the Khoshut and Dzungar Khanates’ (1642-1720) Mongol kings.
A treaty between Tibet and Mongolia, signed in 1913 by a number of Tibetan representatives, including Agvan Dorzhiev, declared their recognition of one another and their independence from China. However, the legitimacy of the treaty and Tibet’s declared independence was rejected by both the Republic of China and the current People’s Republic of China.
Despite this, the Dalai Lamas led the Tibetan government from then until 1951.
