"Unfortunately, it's a myth that certain dog breeds or crossbreeds of dogs are hypoallergenic and therefore don't cause allergic reactions in people," Nina Downing, PDSA vet nurse, tells Country Living.

"Some people with allergies may seem to only have symptoms when exposed to certain breeds, however, this doesn't mean that those breeds won't cause a reaction in someone else. Allergens (the substances that cause allergic reactions) can vary between individual pets, even within the same breed so even if you appear not to react to a certain breed, you could still be allergic to an individual dog."

"Contrary to what a lot of people think, it isn't always dog fur that's the problem. People are actually more commonly allergic to the dander (flakes of dead skin) and proteins from their pets' saliva and skin glands, so hairless breeds can also cause allergies," adds Nina.

"For any prospective dog owners with allergies, the best thing you can do to 'test' out how you'll be with a specific dog, is by spending time with the dog to see if you react. You can do this at a breeder's home, spending time with both the puppies and their mum, or when adopting, rescue centres will often want potential new owners to spend time with the dog they are looking to rehome anyway."
