“A Video of the Ọọ̀ni of Ifẹ̀ Wearing the Sacred Ààrẹ Crown Weighing More Than 50Kg Has Been Trending”

Reactions were mixed online to a trending video of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, rocking the sacred Aare crown at the Olojo festival.

Reports disclosed that the Ooni of Ife fasted for 7 days without eating and the Aare crown weighs 50kg, after videos from the Olojo festival made their way onto the internet.

The Olojo Festival is an ancient festival celebrated annually in Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. It is one of the popular festivals in the Yoruba land, celebrating the remembrance of “Ogun”, god of Iron, who is believed to be the first son of Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba people.

The Yoruba word ‘Olojo’ means ‘The Day Of The First Dawn’ describing the grateful heart of man towards God’s creation and the existence of Human. Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi once described it as a festival celebrating the Black race all over the world.

In the video, the Ooni of Ife appeared tired struggling to move while wearing the sacred Aare crown in the ancient Ife town at the Olojo festival.

An Instagram user, randyradiolover, wrote; “The sacred Aare crown is the only physical symbol of authority inherited by the Ooni from his ancestors. It is believed to have been made from several items, such as cutlass, hoe and 149 other undisclosed objects. It is believed to carry so much power that only the chosen one should and must wear it. History has it that once it is worn by the king, his powers are renewed and a refreshed strength to rule the people in truth.”
