Albert Leornes Greene was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas, and is the son of Albert Leornes Greene Sr. He grew up with his mother, Cora Lee, and father, Robert Jr., and was the youngest of nine children. When Al was ten years old, he and his brothers formed the Green Brothers, a singing group that still exists today. During the late 1950s, the family relocated from Chicago to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and when the boy was a teenager, his father threw him out of the house for listening to the music of soul singer Jackie Wilson.

When he was 75 years old, he began living with his prostitute lover and developing a drug addiction to opiates. In high school, Green formed the singing group Al Greene and the Creations, which continues to this day.
