Aphthous ulcers (aphthae) are generally non-serious and will go away without any particular treatment. Ulcers that heal on their own within a few weeks are not an indication of oral cancer and are non-infectious. The ulcers, however, can be very painful and inconveniencing, especially if they are recurrent.
How long do aphthous ulcers last?
Minor aphthous ulcers (MiAUs) are usually self-limiting, with the usual duration being about 10-14 days without any active treatment. Major aphthous ulcers (MjAUs) can last up to about a month. A third type of RAS, the herpetiform ulcers, are devastating, lasting from 10 days to about 100 days.
Are mouth ulcers dangerous?
Mouth ulcers are common and should clear up on their own within a week or 2. They're rarely a sign of anything serious, but may be uncomfortable to live with.
