Recent research in the last 25 years has validated the importance and use of armrests at a computerized work station. The research is quite clear on the value of armrests and in my clinical ergonomics experience, they are critical and important in the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders to the upper extremities.
Are armrests bad for posture?
The first being that we should use armrests as they support our upper limbs and reduce the amount of load down to our lower back when in a seated posture. The second being that we should not use armrests as they create risk factors such as shoulder shrugging, contact stress on the forearm and leaning postures.
Is armrest an ergonomic?
It depends on a few things to whether or not armrests are the best ergonomic solution for a particular person. An optimal ergonomic set-up is when armrests can be fully adjusted (adequate height, width, and length) to fit the user like a glove. No awkward postures, no discomfort.
