While this species is known to kill as many as 50 people a year in Japan, their dubious nickname comes from their aggressive and deadly behavior towards honey bees, rather than humans. In fact, Asian giant hornets can attack and destroy entire honey bee hives in a matter of hours.
Can Asian hornets kill you?
Although not typically aggressive toward humans, Asian giant hornets will sting people who attempt to handle them. They'll also sting while defending their nest or defending a beehive they are attacking. Mass hornet attacks are very rare, but they can occur; in extreme cases, they can cripple or even kill victims.
How dangerous are Asian giant hornets?
Giant hornets frequently are attracted to tree sap: I was stung by one when I was looking for butterflies on trees. The sting is painful, but the swelling and pain in most cases subside in a few days. Just as with honeybee stings, an allergic reaction, or anaphylaxis, can occasionally put people in the hospital.
