Bowel obstructions typically produce very loud, high-pitched sounds that can often be heard without using a stethoscope. They may also co-occur with pain in the stomach, bloating, and a lack of bowel movement.
What do high pitched bowel sounds mean?
For example, no bowel sounds after a period of hyperactive bowel sounds can mean there is a rupture of the intestines, or strangulation of the bowel and death (necrosis) of the bowel tissue. Very high-pitched bowel sounds may be a sign of early bowel obstruction.
Are bowel sounds low pitched?
The location and pitch of the sounds are important as well. Hypoactive bowel sounds in the right upper quadrant could indicate a bowel obstruction there. The pitch is important, too, as it can indicate the strength of the peristalsis and point to a problem.
