Are Centipedes Poisonous in Florida

Centipedes do more than freak Floridians out in the middle of the night. These creatures bite, which can be pretty painful, due to the toxins they release. You won’t get sick from a centipede bite, and they are certainly not fatal, but victims will tell you a close encounter is still quite unpleasant.

How do you know if a centipede is poisonous?

Centipede bites can be identified by two puncture marks where they inject their venom into the skin. The area around the bite may become red and swollen. The amount of pain you feel will be determined by the amount of venom injected into the bite. Smaller centipedes deliver very little venom.

Can house centipedes harm you?

House centipedes won’t harm people or homes. While their cousins, millipedes, are herbivores that feed on wood, the house centipede is a carnivore that feasts on other insects. They use their jaws to inject poison into prey, but it’s very unlikely for one to bite a human unless it was being handled roughly.
