They adapt to wet or dry soil as well. They make good street trees because they tolerate urban conditions, but keep in mind that planting an elm tree near sidewalks can lead to cracks and raised areas. You can plant container-grown trees any time of year.
Why are elm trees bad?
The elm bark beetle dwells on the elm tree, thereby infecting it with the Dutch Elm Disease due to bacterial growth in the wood. Other elm varieties also harbor the beetles, but do not get infected by the disease. Furthermore, the American elm has a shallow root system, which invades sewage pipelines and foundations.
Why do people not like elm trees?
Unfortunately, in North America and Europe, elm trees have fallen out of favor due to Dutch elm disease (DED), first encountered in the United States during the 1930s. In many areas of the U.S., land developers and landscapers focused on planting only one species of elm, the American elm (Ulmus americana).
