Ventouse and forceps are safe and only used when necessary for you and your baby. Assisted delivery is less common in women who've had a spontaneous vaginal birth before.
What are the side effects of forceps delivery?
Possible risks to your baby — although rare — include:
- Minor facial injuries due to the pressure of the forceps.
- Temporary weakness in the facial muscles (facial palsy)
- Minor external eye trauma.
- Skull fracture.
- Bleeding within the skull.
- Seizures.
Are forceps still used in delivery?
It's not that scary. Operative vaginal delivery – which includes the use of forceps or vacuum – isn't used very often anymore. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the number of babies delivered by forceps or vacuum extraction in 2013 was only 3 percent.
