The couple had applied for a K-1 visa so that Devar could move to the US to marry Melanie after they met and fell in love while she was on vacation. He was a lifeguard at the resort she was visiting and the two of them hit it off in a big way.

Melanie begins the show by explaining that the two of them met while she was in Jamaica on vacation. He was lifeguarding at the resort where she was staying and he immediately caught her eye. They stayed in touch even after the vacation ended with Melanie making multiple visits to Jamaica to see him, and they got engaged after only 20 days together.

The first big hurdle for the couple to overcome is making sure Devar get along with Melanie's son. She makes it very clear that her child is a top priority and Devar says he's on board with that.
