Assign single bits (binary digits 0 and 1). It is usually used in connection with pictures or images (but can also refer to other forms of media). In raster images, each point or pixel in an image is represented by a number that indicates the color of the pixel. .bmp, .gif, or .jpeg files are images that are rendered as bitmaps (as opposed to vector images). If the image were saved or displayed at only 1 bit per pixel, it would be clean and white (1 for and 0 for white). If it were 2 bits per pixel, it could represent four colors (usually grayscale). Using 24 bits per pixel results in over 16 million (224) different colors.
