Bonnie McKee’s Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Bonnie McKee was born in Vacaville, California, on January 20, 1984. She grew up in Seattle, Washington, and began singing at the age of 4. McKee learned to play the piano and joined the Seattle Girls Choir Prime Voci when she was 12 years old. She toured North America and Europe with the choir and performed on two of their albums.
McKee attended the Bush School but was expelled during her freshman year after recording a demo for a school project. When she was 12 years old, her mother gave a CD of her singing Fiona Apple and Bette Midler songs to Jonathan Poneman, co-founder of the Sub Pop record label. Poneman asked if she could write songs, and McKee realized she needed to be more than just a singer.
