Bruce Pascoe was born in Richmond, Victoria, in 1947 to his loving parents. He grew up in a low-income working-class family; his father, Alf, was a carpenter, and his mother, Gloria Pascoe, won a gold medal in lawn bowling at the 1980 Arnhem Paralympics.
Pascoe spent his early years on King Island, where his father worked in a tungsten mine. When he was ten years old, his family relocated to Mornington, Victoria, followed by Fawkner, a Melbourne suburb two years later.
