If the skin reaction is severe (bleeding, formation of sores/blisters/ulcers), imiquimod may need to be temporarily stopped so that the skin can heal. Follow your doctor’s directions. Flu-like symptoms (such as fever, tiredness, muscle aches), runny/stuffy nose, cough, diarrhea, nausea, and back pain may also occur.
How long do the side effects of imiquimod last?
The skin reaction tends to be worst in week 2 to 3 of treatment. For most people, the more sore and red the skin becomes, the better the treatment works. It is normal for redness and some crusting to persist for around 2 weeks after the treatment course has finished.
How long does imiquimod take to work?
Aldara should not be used for more than 16 weeks at a time. It usually takes 8-10 weeks for your warts to disappear but warts may clear as early as 4 weeks.
