Can Animals Get Ulcers

Animals with severe ulceration and/or GI perforation may present with signs of pain, weakness, pallor, and shock. Clinical signs consistent with sepsis can be present in cases of perforated ulcer. Clinical signs of a causative factor may be seen. Some dogs and cats with GI ulceration do not show any clinical signs.

How can you tell if your dog has an ulcer?

  1. Significant weight loss.
  2. Lack of appetite.
  3. Abdominal pain.
  4. High heart rate.
  5. Vomiting.
  6. Bloody stool/diarrhea.
  7. Lethargic behavior (weak)
  8. Excessive drooling.

How do you treat an ulcer in a cat?

  1. Intravenous liquids for hydration.
  2. Antibiotics to fight bacterial infection.
  3. Antacid medications.
  4. Bland diet.
  5. Cessation of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  6. Rest and isolation for animal recovering from traumatic experience or surgery.
