When light from an object is reflected by a surface, it changes direction. It bounces off the surface at the same angle as it hits it. Smooth, shiny surfaces such as mirrors and polished metals reflect light well. Dull and dark surfaces such as dark fabrics do not reflect light well.
Does metal reflect light?
Metals have high reflectivity, reflecting almost all wavelengths in the visible region of the spectrum. This is related to their high damping constant, which leads to a short distance crossed by the light.
Do rough and dull objects reflect light?
Almost everything reflects light but some surfaces are better reflectors than others. Dark or dull surfaces like slate, concrete and wood are poor reflectors. Most of the light that hits them is absorbed and little bounces back off. Uneven or rough surfaces like sand, leather and stone scatter the light that hits them.
