Eversion (turning the foot outward) stresses the joint medially. This stress often causes an avulsion fracture of the medial malleolus rather than a ligament sprain because the deltoid ligament is so strong. However, eversion can also cause a sprain.
Is eversion The most common ankle sprain?
The most common low ankle injury is called an inversion ankle sprain. This occurs when the ankle rolls inwards, stretching the connecting tissue within the ankle joint. Eighty percent of all low ankle injuries are inversion sprains, with the remainder being eversion sprains.

With an eversion ankle sprain, your ankle will roll inwards. There will be immediate pain on the inside of your ankle after twisting it. Swelling will develop rapidly and bruising may appear later.
