Grinding. Unfortunately, slate responds to grinding in a different manner than natural stones, such as travertine and granite. You can grind and sand the surface of most natural stones, then use different grit diamond sand papers to resurface the pieces back to their original sheen.
Can you use sandpaper on slate?
You should use a fine-grit sandpaper as it is ideal to sand scratches by spot sanding and concentrating on the problematic areas. Step 1: Start with a lower grit number for honing and move up to a bigger grit, such as a 400-grit or a 600-grit, to slowly and gradually achieve a polished look that is consistent.
How do you make slate smooth?
With a clean sponge, apply a very small amount of linseed oil to the face of the slate (make sure the slate is dry at this point) and the visible edges. Once done, polish with a soft polishing cloth, removing any streaks left by the linseed oil. This finishes the slate nicely and gives it a sheen.
