Can Potatoes Grow Without Water

Potato plants need 1 inch of water per week to reach their maximum potential. Without water, the potatoes will not reach full size. Additionally, they may be deformed or have a hard texture. After the blossoms appear on potato plants, increase the water supply to 1 1/2 inches of water per week.

What happens if you don't water potatoes?

TOO LITTLE WATER If the spring and early summer has provided adequate rainfall the leaf growth will be good. But if that rainfall tapers off significantly during late June onwards, as is often the case, the tubers will suffer. Up to a point (don’t waterlog the soil) lots of water promotes larger potatoes.

How much moisture do potatoes need?

Potatoes are quite sensitive to moisture stress over much of the growing season, so they need relatively high soil moisture levels (60-80% of the available water capacity) to achieve high yields and quality.
