Can Shooting Stars Go Straight Down?

This is called a meteor or shooting star (or a falling star). In general, the meteors travel in a (approximately) straight path. We usually see only the large ones travel down towards the horizon while the small ones are burnt up long before that (giving the impression of coming from the horizon).

Can shooting stars go vertical?

A meteor can appear to travel upward across your field of vision if in 3D space it starts out ahead of you and is coming towards you at a relatively shallow angle to the vertical.

Do meteor showers go in a straight line?

Because meteor shower particles are all traveling in parallel paths, at the same velocity, they will all appear to radiate from a single point in the sky to an observer below.
