Clear doesn't stick to gold leaf as well as the paint around it. Light coats at first is good advice, not because of possible lifting. The gold leaf is slipperier that the paint next to it and you might get a clear sag on the leaf if painting vertical.
Can I spray clear coat over gold leaf?
The greater the addition of these base metals, the greater the likelihood that the gold leaf will tarnish. Gold of 23k or 22k should not tarnish when used indoors for fine art or decorative purposes, unless handled and touched. Genuine gold of lesser karats should be protected with a clear coating.
Can you seal gold leaf?
All metal leaf should be sealed before beginning your painting. If painting in acrylic on a leaf with no copper in it (genuine gold 22-24ct, genuine or imitation silver) then you can seal it with a hard clear acrylic polymer medium in gloss.
