Can You Compost Turves?

Composting with sod layers is not hard and you can layer in any order as long as the first layer is newspaper or cardboard and the last layer is carbon. If you want the process to go faster, weight a sheet of black plastic over the pile to keep the heat in. Check it frequently to make sure the pile is lightly moist.

How do you compost grass sod?

Lay the sod, soil and root side up, in the compost pile. Layering the sod pieces creates a nice mix of soil and grass for quick composting. Keep the pile moist but not wet to speed decomposition. Be patient, it can take one or more seasons for a large pile of sod to decompose.

What do you do with old turf grass?

Provided it hasn't been treated with weedkillers, old turf makes terrific compost. Simply stack it, grass side down, into a neat heap in a sunny corner. Over time – and we're talking a couple of years – the grass will decompose and be broken down into plant nutrients.
