Can You Have Fremitus?

Fremitus is the vibration or movement of a tooth when teeth come into contact together. If you were to take your fingernail and put it on the front surface of a tooth and have the patient close together, and the tooth moved, that's fremitus.

Is fremitus a normal finding?

A normal evaluation occurs when equal and moderate vibrations are noticed during speech. Fremitus is abnormal when it is increased or decreased. Because sound is transmitted more strongly through non–air-filled lung, increased fremitus suggests a loss or decrease in ventilation in the underlying lung.

Can you Auscultate fremitus?

Of note, the fremitus can also be auscultated and can be referred to as vocal fremitus.
