Can You Mix Lye and Bleach

Do not mix chlorine bleach with toilet bowl cleaners, ammonia, lye, rust remover, vinegar, or oven cleaner. You may inadvertently create chlorine gas, which is highly toxic — even lethal.

What does bleach and lye do?

Bleach can react with fats much as lye does, splitting off fatty acids, which then react with the sodium to form salts of fatty acids — or soap. If you get bleach on your hands, the bleach reacts with fats from your skin to make soap, so that soapy feel is actually because of soap.

What chemicals can be mixed with bleach?

Bleach is especially toxic and should not be mixed with anything other than water. Some of the most deadly combinations are ammonia and bleach, vinegar and bleach, and rubbing alcohol and bleach.
