Can You over Centrifuge?

Prolonged centrifugation may cause hemolysis. When using a bench-top centrifuge, employ a balance tube of the same type containing an equivalent volume of water. Do not exceed 10 minutes of spin time unless otherwise specified.

Can you centrifuge too long?

The pathlength of the gradient must be sufficient for the separation to occur. Time is important. If you perform too long runs, particles may all pellet at the bottom of the tube.

Is it OK to stop a centrifuge after it has been started?

If the centrifuge begins to shake or wobble, it is off-balance and you should stop it immediately.
