Can You Tile over Slate

Slate is generally considered one of the finer surfaces for floors or walls, but maybe you’ve got a slate surface that’s stained beyond repair, or you just don’t like it. You can cover that surface with ceramic tile fairly easily, since slate provides the kind of strong, solid backing that ceramic needs.

Can you put flooring over slate?

If you have an old slate floor, and you don’t like the look of it anymore, but you don’t want the work and expense of ripping it out, one easy solution is to lay a floating floor over it. Floating floors are not attached to the subfloor in any way, but merely sit on top of it.

How hard is it to remove slate flooring?

Since slate tiles are heavy and removing the floor tiles isn’t that easy, it becomes time-consuming and a little expensive at the same time. Make sure you are equipped with safety glasses and gloves. Broken slate edges are sharp and can hurt you as much as glass. Working with a chisel and hammer is not a gentle job.
