Claire’s Tip of the Week: What Is Togarashi?

Togarashi, used in this brussels sprouts recipe, is Japanese for Capsicum or chili pepper. In English, it refers to a popular Japanese spice mixture consisting of seven ingredients, also known as Shichimi. Depending on the manufacturer the ingredients will vary slightly. Commonly used is a mixture of peppers, orange peel, white and black sesame seeds, ginger and seaweed or nori. If you haven’t already, once you taste togarashi it will become a staple in your spice cabinet. Used much like salt and pepper on American tables, try this flavorful, aromatic and versatile condiment sprinkled over vegetables, rice, pasta or eggs, in marinades and dressing, stirred into soups and stews or for grilled meats, poultry and seafood. You can find togarashi at larger grocers, Asian markets or online.
