Cory was born as Cory Ephram Joseph in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was born to Connie Joseph and David Joseph as the youngest of their four children. Although he was born in Toronto, Cory grew up nearby Pickering, Ontario.

Cory was destined to be a basketball player as he was born in a basketball family. His parents were basketball players at their time and used to play basketball for their college teams. On top of that, his siblings also used to play basketball from an early age.

At the age of 16, Cory transferred to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. He led the Findley Prep to the ESPN RISE National High School Invitational championship game in 2009.

As for his college, Joseph committed to the University of Texas. Their cory started playing for the college basketball team and was named the Big 12 All-Freshman team at the end of the 2010 season. At the same time, Joseph was declared for the NBA draft.
