Dachshunds: Facts, Temperament, Characteristics, Size

Each month we will be shining a light on different dog breeds in our series, Dog Breed of the Month. Next up, we take a look at gorgeous, intelligent Dachshunds.

"Dachshunds, especially the Miniature Smooth Haired variety, have become popular in recent years, partially due to their size which makes them suitable for smaller houses and apartments, and also because of their lively and comical nature," Bill Lambert, a Kennel Club spokesperson tells Country Living.

Dachshunds are generally good family dogs, although they can have an independent and stubborn side when it comes to training. They are often known for being boisterous when playing and are best suited for older children.

Shauna Walsh, PDSA vet nurse, tells us: "Dachshunds are affectionate and playful little dogs who can have a lot of energy despite their small size. They love to curl up and burrow into warm places, so after their adventures, they will be looking for a cosy place to sleep."

Dachshunds will need to be groomed regularly, but this also depends on what type of coat your dog has.

"Dachshunds have a variety of coat types – smooth, long, or wire-hired – and can be either standard or miniature-sized. Grooming will depend on coat type, with the shorthaired types likely to need weekly brushing, and the longhaired types daily brushing to prevent matting," continues Shauna.
