Did Groceries Get More Expensive?

Food prices have gone up over the past year, due in part to supply chain issues magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says grocery prices are up more than three percent over the last year. Some items like meat are up even more-- nearly ten percent over the last year.

Food prices rose again last month by 0.7%, according to the latest consumer price index, released yesterday. That may not sound like a lot, but it adds up. Over the past year, prices for groceries and other food prepared at home increased 2.6%.

Are grocery prices going up in 2021?

How long will higher prices continue? Next year, food-at-home price increases are expected to ease little, between 1.5 and 2.5 percent, down from 2.5 to 3.5 percent overall in 2021, according to the USDA.
