Did the Celts Wear Torcs

Torcs (sometimes spelt torques, from the Latin) were meant to be worn around the neck and wrist and have been found across Celtic Europe from Iberia to Bohemia. They were not, however, unique to Celtic cultures despite their strong association with this form of jewellery.

What was a torc used for?

A Torc is a rigid neck or wrist ornament popular in the Bronze Age. Derived from the Latin word ‘torquis’, meaning ‘to twist,’ the bulk of surviving examples of ancient Torcs were typically crafted out of gold. But there are also ancient examples of Torcs in other metals like Silver or Bronze.

What does torc mean in Gaelic?

torc1, m. ( toirc, gpl. ~). Boar. ~ allta, wild boar.
