Diy Superquilter and Yarn Girl Halloween Costumes

An old quilt gets a new life as a playful cape for a superhero mom, while wooden dowels and dowel toppers become oversize knitting needles for her trusty sidekick. A sewing basket does double duty as a trick-or-treat “bag.” What's Yarn Girl's favorite candy? Rainbow laces, of course, which look a lot like yarn.

Superquilter Mom Costume

1. For the cape, cut a quilt into a trapezoid shape.
2. Sew a corresponding color bias tape around the quilt edges to finish.
3. At the top corners of the trapezoid (the corners of the shortest side), sew a corresponding color ribbon for ties.
4. Use a scrap of the quilt to cut out an oversize letter “Q” and blanket stitch it to the front of a T-shirt.
5. Blanket stitch around the edges of a felt superhero mask.
6. Round out the look with a tailor tape measure bracelet adorned with sewing charms.
7. Glue a metal thimble to a silver ring blank to create a superpower ring.

Yarn Ball Child Costume

1. Measure child’s shoulder width and head diameter.
2. Blow up an 18- to 24-inch round balloon or beach ball (the size will depend on child’s height).
3. Mold CraftWrap around the balloon or ball, leaving wide enough openings on the top (for the head) and the bottom (for the head and shoulders) to pass through; allow to dry.
4. Remove balloon or beach ball. Adjust openings if needed and use an X-Acto knife to cut out armholes.
5. Coil a base layer of thick yarn (we used mustard yellow) around the form, hot-gluing it in place as you go.
6. Attach autumnal colored yarn (we used orange, cranberry, and mustard) in a random pattern, hot-gluing it in place at irregular points of the openings.
7. Cut two 1- by 24-inch wooden dowels to 16 inches; glue dowel caps to one end of each. Thread through yarn.
