The call of Xenopus laevis is a 2-part trill, about 1/2 second, repeated up to 100 times per minute. Males have no vocal sacs and call from underwater during the day and at night. Calls are only faintly heard in the air, if at all.
Why is my African clawed frog croaking?
It's calling for a mate. They do this often as adults but can be triggered by water changes of high pressure fronts. I can't say I have heard of them calling for food before. Black hands and forearms are the signs of a sexually mature male, it's fine.
