Do All Rabbits Have Dewlaps?

All rabbits have the genetic ability to form a dewlap, but it's not necessary for male rabbits to have a dewlap for nesting. So when a male rabbit starts to gain weight, the fatty tissue in the chin and neck area will start to build up and the elastic skin in that area will form a dewlap.

What rabbits have dewlaps?

Breeds With Dewlaps

They include Flemish Giants, Californians and French Lops -- even male French lops are allowed to have small dewlaps, although the feature is not favorable. Breeds that are allowed but not required to have dewlaps include Giant Chinchillas, German Lops, Miniature Lops and New Zealands.

Why do rabbits have a lump under their chin?

Lumps under the skin in rabbits are often caused by abscesses which commonly occur on the face and limbs. These masses are formed by inflamed tissue containing thick, purulent discharge. This can lead to discomfort, sepsis, and necrosis for your rabbit.
