Symptomatic arachnoid cysts are relatively rare, and no case reports have described recurrence of such cysts almost 30 years after surgery. We herein report a case in which a symptomatic intradural arachnoid cyst recurred 29 years after fenestration of the primary lesion.
Are arachnoid cysts permanent?
Untreated, arachnoid cysts may cause permanent severe neurological damage when progressive expansion of the cyst(s) or bleeding into the cyst injures the brain or spinal cord. Symptoms usually resolve or improve with treatment.
Do arachnoid cysts grow over time?
The arachnoid cysts can grow to a large size if they continue to retain cerebrospinal fluid. In more extreme cases the cysts' size may cause the head to change shape or may displace the surrounding lobes of the brain.
