Do Begonias Grow from Seed

There are many types of begonias you can start from seed. Some types, like rex begonias, are easier to grow from root or leaf cuttings, but the experience of starting other types from seed is lots of fun.

How long does it take to grow begonias from seed?

The seeds should germinate in two to three weeks. When the seeds germinate, immediately remove the plastic wrap or dome and place the seedlings under fluorescent lights. The lights should be positioned within 4 to 6 inches of the seedlings and left on for 12 to 14 hours each day.

Does Begonia reproduce by seeds?

A particular group of begonias, called the rex begonias (Begonia rex cultorum), propagate themselves through leaf cuttings. Unlike other plants that use specific stem portions for reproduction, the rex begonia uses its leaf veins to create new plantlets. The plant thrives outdoors in warmer Mediterranean climates.
