Do Bunnies Have Periods?

Rabbits do not menstruate. If unspayed females start passing blood, they can bleed to death within a few days. Blood in the urine can also be a sign of bladder stones.

Why do female rabbits bleed?

Sedentary rabbits, female rabbits, and middle-aged rabbits are all at risk of developing hematuria. This may be due to kidney stones, bacterial bladder infections, and/or an increase of calcium in the blood. The most common cause of hematuria in intact females, however, is the dysfunction of the reproductive tract.

How long is a rabbits period?

There is no regular estrous cycle, instead ovulation occurs after mating. If coitus does not occur, the doe will vary in receptivity as ovarian follicles regress and new follicles mature. Periods of receptivity last anywhere from 5 to 14 days and are followed by one to two days in which the doe will refuse to mate.
