Do Dogs Get Liver Flukes

In most cases, liver fluke infection in dogs is asymptomatic. When clinical signs occur they include lethargy, diarrhoea and dehydration. Migration of immature flukes can cause acute hepatitis and pancreatitis.

Can dogs catch fluke?

Many species of distome trematodes have been reported from the liver of dogs and cats in most parts of the world. Mild infections may pass unnoticed; however, in severe infection, dogs may develop progressive weakness, ending in complete exhaustion, coma, and death.

What are the symptoms of liver flukes?

Untreated, infections may persist for up to 25–30 years, the lifespan of the parasite. Typical symptoms include indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation. In severe cases, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea can occur.
