Do Dogs Have Declarative Memory?

A scientific study out of Hungary says dogs indeed have declarative memory, the type of long-term memory responsible for remembering facts and information.

What type of memory do dogs have?

Dogs, though, do not have an episodic memory. They have something called an associative memory, which means they remember events based on associations, and not actual memories. For example, if you put on your sneakers before taking your dog for a walk, your dog will be excited every time you wear them.

Do dogs have genetic memory?

Commonly they are seen to either compete for food or where possible avoid one another entirely. Perhaps, despite the fact that our dogs are now domesticated, there might be a "genetic memory" that still resides in dogs; one that had been used to avoid conflict and danger in the distant past.
