Do I Need a Netbios Name?

It should not be needed at all unless you still have some very ancient legacy non-TCP application that needs some sort of session layer naming service. If you are machine has an IP and DNS, you can join it to the domain using the full domain suffix. No NetBIOS needed, I just validated.

Do you still need NetBIOS?

NetBIOS (Network Basic Input/Output System) was created in the early 1980's, but is surprisingly still alive and well on many networks today. Microsoft Windows still uses it for its name resolution function (often by default), when DNS is not available.

Does NetBIOS name matter?

Why This Matters

Just as DNS names can conflict, NetBIOS names can also conflict. Most of the time this will not pose an issue. Windows queries NetBIOS as a last resort for name resolution, and without a WINS server in your network, NetBIOS names cannot cross layer 2 (the subnet). ... Such name conflicts should be avoided.
