Little auks wintering off south-western Greenland probably migrate along the edge of the drift ice in the western part of the Greenland Sea until they reach the wintering areas in October-November. They start their return to their breeding colonies in February-March and arrive at the colonies in Svalbard in April.
Do auks migrate?
Little auks mainly breed (May to August) in Greenland, Svalbard and the Russian Western Arctic, and currently migrate southwards into the Atlantic, with at-sea wintering areas (October to February) ranging from the Barents Sea to Newfoundland45 (See Supplemental Materials I).
Can little auks fly?
Although Auks resemble penguins they are not particularly related. One of the main differences is that all existing species of Auks can fly, though they have to flap their stubby little wings at extremely fast speeds to stay airborne.
