The one-point safety is different from the two-point safety because it benefits the offense instead of the defense. It occurs when the defense gains possession of the ball during an extra point or two-point conversion attempt. The defense then gets tackled by the offense in their end zone.
Do safeties tackle?
The primary job for safety, being on defense, is to keep the offense from scoring at all costs. The team works together as a whole to tackle offense members, intercept the ball, and make sure the offense doesn't move the ball close enough to their goal so that a scoring opportunity isn't easily available.
Do safeties have to be fast?
A safety must be fast enough to pursue the run in front of him by shutting down alleys before the runner gets through the first and second levels of the defense. He must also have enough burst to accelerate out of his breaks and attack the ball going both forward (toward the run) and backward (in coverage).
