Golden shiners eat plankton (small algae and animals that float in the water column) and very small crustaceans. They eat by sucking in plankton or small crustaceans one at a time. They may also eat dragongly nymphs sometimes.
Can you feed shiners fish food?
They do, but they will also eat fish pellets. In a buddy's pond, they'll peck at pellets larger than they can eat. A bunch of shiners will gang up on one pellet, and push it around the pond as they eat it. If you're feeding the trout pellets, those would work.
How do you keep shiners alive at home?
Freeze 4 or 5 bottles of tap water and throw them in your ice chest. Keep swapping out the bottles from your shiner bucket after they've melted in the bucket. Also make sure there's plenty of water in there. The amount of water they give you at the store won't keep them alive.
