Do They Still Test for Pku?

All 50 states in the United States require newborns to be screened for PKU. Many other countries also routinely screen infants for PKU. If you have PKU or a family history of it, your doctor may recommend screening tests before pregnancy or birth. It's possible to identify PKU carriers through a blood test.

Is PKU testing required by law?

Although PKU is rare, all newborns in the United States are required to get a PKU test. The test is easy, with virtually no health risk. But it can save a baby from lifelong brain damage and/or other serious health problems. If PKU is found early, following a special, low-protein/low-Phe diet can prevent complications.

Do they test for PKU at birth?

The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all newborns be tested for PKU. The blood sample for PKU is usually taken from your baby's heel (called a heel stick). The test is done in the first few days after birth, as early as 24 hours after birth.
