Ramadan is the most important month in the Islamic calendar. It serves as a reminder of the month when the Qur'an (the Muslim holy book) was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammed “Peace Be Upon Him”. During this month, Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. This is called fasting.
What is Ramadan celebrated for?
During the day Muslims are encouraged to engage in charity and devote extra time and attention to spiritual activities, such as praying and reading the Quran. The fast is broken with an evening meal, called iftar, once the sun goes down.
Do you say celebrate Ramadan?
Some shops give away goodie bags to kids to mark the occasion. The Arabic greeting to wish someone a happy Ramadan is “Ramadan Mubarek.” Or you can just say “Happy Ramadan.”
