What we can be pretty certain about is that they do not do it to entertain us humans but for some purpose beneficial to their survival. It takes a certain combination of circumstance, mood, timing and luck to see a whale jump.
Do whales have fun?
Most species of whale are known to spend their time doing a variety of activities including foraging, migrating, mating, socializing, sleeping and exploring. Not all whales however will engage equally in all of the activities listed above.
