Do You Need Primer Before Tiling?

Before tiling, certain wall and floor backgrounds must be primed for a number of reasons including; to reduce porosity (absorbency) of backgrounds or bases (preventing the formation of air bubbles), to minimise risk of chemical reaction with cement-based adhesives and to add surface strength to friable (weak) surfaces.

Should I prime wall before tiling?

Prime the area to seal the new drywall. Prime an area larger than you plan to tile to minimize the cut-in work when you paint the rest of the room. Or, prime and paint the entire wall/room before starting with your tile project.

Why do you need a primer for tiles?

The primary role of a tile primer is to create better adhesion of a thinset, mud bed or self leveling underlayment (SLU) to the substrate (the surface you'll be tiling). A latex tile primer can also be mixed in thinset to enhance it's bond strength, water-resistance and bond-strength.
