A “hip click” refers to an audible “click” or “pop” that occurs when a baby's hips are being examined. When an infant has a “hip click” it does not mean that a baby has hip dysplasia. While some infants that have a hip click will be diagnosed with hip dysplasia, there are babies with hip clicks that have normal hips.
Is hip dysplasia the same as clicky hips?
Hip dysplasia is a problem that is sometimes noticed in babies, and sometimes in children around the time they're learning to walk. It is sometimes called 'clicky hips', because if you move the hips of a baby with hip dysplasia, you can often feel a little click.
Can clicky hips be normal?
It is important to bear in mind that a clicky hip can be entirely normal and may well stabilise itself in the following weeks. However, if some instability is identified, then your baby's hips should be checked again within two to three weeks by an ultrasound.
